Culture

Haghpat Monastery is one of two components of the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site of Haghpat and Sanahin in Armenia’s Lori region. The complex dates from the 10th to the 13th century and is in harmonious relation with the surrounding landscape.

The monastery complex includes a narthex, a refectory, a scriptorium, the Chapel of Hamazasp, a bell tower, funerary chapels, khachkars, and a fortified defensive wall. The oldest structure in the complex, the Church of St. Nishan, was built between 976 and 991 AD.

In the immediate vicinity of Haghpat are the ruins of Kayan Fortress, also called Aknaberd, on a hill between Haghpat and Sanahin. The fortress was built in 1233 by a bishop of Haghpat Monastery.

Karuti Dambaranadasht, Kayan, Anastas Ev Artem Mikoyanneri, Zak’aryanneri, and Koshaberd are also located near Haghpat.

Kond, Yeghnak’ar, and Agarakaglukh are located in the area surrounding Haghpat.
