Culture and History

The “Museum of the Battle for the Dnieper” was opened in Loyew on 9 May 1985 as a branch of the “Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War”. It is a memorial monument to all participants in the Second World War, not only the soldiers who fought on the Dnieper. The exhibition contains materials about the partisan movement in Loyevshchina and about local people from the region who took part in the Second World War.

The liberation of Belarus from the Nazi occupiers began in 1943 from the Loyev bridgehead. The museum association “Nasledniki Loya” also explores the history of the town and is dedicated to researching the history of Loyevshchina and preserving historical and cultural traditions.

The project “Inside the Front Line” is presented as part of the temporary exhibition “Partisans. Episodes” and emerged from the fieldwork of the “Museum of the Battle for the Dnieper” between 2019 and 2021. It presents the memories of children who experienced the war in Loyev, describing the lives of civilians during the war. The project “Loyev in Color” also involved colorizing old black-and-white photographs from the museum’s collection.

The description of the “Loyev Batleyka” mentions an interlude from the traditional Belarusian puppet theatre repertoire that was performed at fairs and public celebrations. This entry also mentions a performance without musical accompaniment and a fragment of Belarusian religious verse. The museum association “Nasledniki Loya” also developed and organized the urban travel game “Loyeva Gora. Discover”.

Nature

The “Loyev” Geological Exposure is a geological natural monument of national significance and is located in the cliff on the right bank of the Dnieper. The exposure reveals ancient lake and swamp deposits. The geological section of the Loyev Fault in the Loyev-Don Basin formed between 135,000 and 110,000 years ago.
