What landscapes and natural attractions define Yakoruda?

The municipality includes sections of two mountain ranges and the Mesta Valley. In the part of Rila National Park within the municipality, forests, high-altitude lakes, and mountain meadows form the defining landscape. Another protected natural area is Bəlatsite, which safeguards centuries-old white pines. These diverse natural features give the region more than one focal point: alongside mountain scenery and lakes, the preservation of ancient pine forests is also part of its character.

The Yakoruda Lakes lie in the eastern part of the Rila Mountains and consist of three glacial lakes. They are considered a popular destination for tourists. Those interested in mountain lakes will find a distinctive natural attraction here; the lakes should be considered as a group, not as a single body of water. The “Chesnensko Usoe” waterfall, also known as “Yakoruda Waterfall,” is another prominent natural feature: it is 15 to 16 metres high.

Which routes and excursions are worth exploring?

The Treshtenik resort area is the starting point for numerous hiking routes, including trails to the Granchar and Zavrachitsa huts. Its distance from Yakoruda helps put its location into perspective: Treshtenik lies 14 kilometres north of the town. Another route, for a different activity, is the Treshtenik–Mochura mountain biking trail. It is considered suitable for beginners and even children, and leads to a small lake on the Banenska; a designated rest area is located right beside it. The Treshtenik–Semkovo route begins at the Treshtenik resort complex above Yakoruda.

A route to N eh t enski Waterfall is also described. It is a there-and-back route from Yakoruda, following the Byala Mesta River to the waterfall on the Banenska. The route is suitable for walking only. If you are planning a trip in the area, you can take this restriction into account when choosing your excursions. For road travel, the II-84 is another useful reference point: the section between Razlog and Velingrad crosses the municipality for 29 kilometres and passes through the town of Yakoruda. For information about the town, see also the Jakoruda page.

What cultural highlights are there?

Alongside its natural attractions, Yakoruda offers specific cultural points of interest. The Djerzhdevden Church, also known as the Gergyovden Church, is an early Christian church on the outskirts of the town. Another expression of local community life is the “Topene na Belezi” ritual: Christians and Muslims have celebrated it together in Yakoruda for eleven consecutive years; the local community revived it.

A chitalishte in Yakoruda has a women’s vocal group performing folk and old urban songs, as well as a men’s folklore group. There are also children’s groups for folklore, modern, and folk dancing. These activities represent different forms of cultural life—from a shared ritual to singing and dance groups.
