Jambol: Hotels and Accommodation

Jambol is the venue for the annual Kukerlandia Mask Festival, held in the last week of February. Bulgarian and international participants take part. Mask, costume and figure traditions include Kukeri, Survakari, Babugeri and Mechkari.

History

The medieval fortress of Yambol was built between 971 and 1049 in the western part of present-day Yambol. Sections of the southern and western walls, a square tower, part of the northern wall standing over three metres high and measuring approximately 80 metres in length, and part of a round corner tower have been preserved. The fortress is surrounded by the Tundzha River on three sides.

Culture

The Yambol Bezisten is Bulgaria’s only surviving building of the covered market type from the Ottoman period. The “Well of Time” in the Yambol Bezisten presents walking routes around Yambol and displays video material in five languages. The Bezisten is also used for concerts, theatre performances, book presentations and other cultural events.

The Museum of Military Glory in Yambol is a municipal military museum that opened in 2013. The Georges Papazov Art Gallery has six halls for permanent exhibitions and two halls for temporary exhibitions. It houses more than 3,800 movable cultural assets. Its collection of decorative art includes textiles, woodcarvings, ceramics, metal, glass, leather and jewellery.

Surroundings

Near Yambol, 7 km away, lies the “Thracian and Ancient City of Kabyle” Archaeological Reserve, which is easily accessible to tourists. Kabyle offers an on-site historical film, 3D reconstructions and self-guided tours with an audio guide system.
