Madzharovo: Hotels and accommodation

Nature

The Madzharovo area is part of the Natura 2000 ecological network and the Madzharovo protected area, which encompasses part of the Arda Valley with steep mountain slopes.

The Madzharovo area is associated with a unique colony of Egyptian vultures, described as the only one of its kind in Bulgaria and one of only a few in Europe. The protected areas of Kovan Kaya, Patronka, Momina Skala and Chernata Skala are also associated with the area; rare birds and striking rock formations can be observed there.

Water and River

The Eastern Rhodopes Nature Conservation Centre is located on the main road to Madzharovo, immediately after the bridge over the Arda. Visitors arriving from Haskovo or Harmanli turn left to reach its car park. A rafting tour on the Arda begins near the centre; it covers 13 km and lasts approximately two hours.

The rafting trip stops in the “Кован кая” protected area, where participants can view the nests of Egyptian vultures from closer range using a spotting scope.

The route passes near the protected areas of “Черната скала”, “Момина скала”, “Кован кая” and “Патронка”.

Observation and Trails

The Eastern Rhodopes Nature Conservation Centre offers an interactive exhibition about vultures and provides binoculars and spotting scopes for birdwatching. Visitors can observe and photograph birds from three specialised observation huts; the huts are open year-round.

The signposted Madzharovo–Patronka route combines 2 km of paved road from the town centre with a 15-minute forest trail.

The fortress on Hisarya Hill can be reached from Madzharovo via 9 km of paved road, followed by 6 km of gravel road with sections of macadam surfacing, and finally a 20-minute section along a marked tourist trail.

Culture and History

Madzharovo was known as Yatadjik for centuries and received its current name in 1949 in honour of voivode Dimitar Madzharov.

Cuisine

The Trakiyska Kashta restaurant in Borislavtsi offers Bulgarian national cuisine and an extensive fish menu featuring freshly caught fish from the Ivaylovgrad Reservoir.

The Kartal tavern at the Madzharovo Visitor Centre serves Bulgarian and local cuisine, including traditional Rhodope cheverme.
