The Velchevo protected area comprises wet meadows on both sides of the Vidima River north, northwest, and east of Velchevo. It includes meadow communities along the riverbanks, shrubs, and deciduous forests on nearby foothills and hills. The protected area with code BG 0002111 has been designated in the municipality of Apriltsi for the protection of birds. Part of the municipality of Apriltsi lies within Central Balkan National Park.
