Patalenitsa: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture

The Batkun Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul is an active monastery open to visitors near Patalenitsa, in the foothills of the Western Rhodopes. The Sanctuary of Asclepius at Haidushko Well lies about 3 km northwest of the center of Patalenitsa and was in use from the second half of the 1st century until the end of the 4th century. The Thracian fortified city at Haidushko Well was also located about 2.66 km northwest of the center.

The Batkunion Fortress in Patalenitsa covered about 22 decares and had four round defensive towers. The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was built at the beginning of the 18th century and is described as the oldest continuously functioning church in the Diocese of Plovdiv. In the Batkun district of Patalenitsa, the Church of St Mary was built in 1892 on the site of an older chapel. The Narodno Chitalishte St Panteleimon-1909 was founded on May 11, 1909.

Festivals and Cuisine

Before St George's Day, animals are brought into the courtyards of Patalenitsa's two active churches and blessed by a priest. Patalenitsa celebrates St George's Day with lambs roasted in prepared pits. The local preparation method takes more than four to five hours and includes basting with water and herbs.

Patalenitsa also celebrates Todorovden with a blessing service, followed by horse races in the fields.

Hiking

A three-hour route from the school in Patalenitsa leads via the Church of St Demetrius to the old Roman road. The old Roman road near Patalenitsa runs along the Karkaria Ridge and is described as being well preserved. A two-hour hiking route from Patalenitsa to the Batkun Monastery and Haidushko Well via the Aiazmo Valley is also described.

A hike of about 30 minutes from the center of Patalenitsa follows an unpaved road to St George Chapel near the Tepeto hill. The hiking trails described in Patalenitsa are not marked. Guides can be arranged in Patalenitsa upon prior request.

There is no place in Patalenitsa where hot meals are available continuously. However, lunch can be provided for groups of 30 to 40 tourists by prior arrangement.
