Dimitrovo: Hotels and Accommodation
Pernik hosts the annual International Festival of Masquerade Games “Surova”, which is associated with the Surova Folk Festival; in 2017, the festival was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Culture
The Krakra Hill was inhabited from the 5th millennium BC until the end of the 12th century. In antiquity, the Pernik fortress was an important military, administrative and commercial centre. In the Tsarkva district, there is a Thracian sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, Hygieia and the Thracian Horseman.
The Historical Museum of Pernik has a general historical profile. The Mining Museum specialises in the development of coal mining in Pernik. The Regional Historical Museum of Pernik preserves 54,918 objects in its collections.
The Underground Mining Museum is located in two mine galleries with a total length of 630 metres and includes around 30 exhibitions on the development of mining in Bulgaria.
Nature
The Municipality of Pernik includes part of Vitosha National Park and the Ostritsa botanical reserve. Living Water is a natural phenomenon: water bubbles out of the nostrils of a crocodile head carved into the rock.
The hiking trail to Slavey Hut begins at the Pernik Prophylactorium, which can be reached by bus route 2.
Visiting
At Krakra Fortress, the foundations of three Christian churches can be seen, including a basilica with a central nave and two side aisles, as well as a two-storey church used for burials. Platforms on the walls offer a bird’s-eye view of Pernik and its surroundings.
The fortress can be reached either via an asphalt avenue open to vehicles or via a path with stairs. The Cultural and Information Centre provides information about Pernik’s tourist and cultural attractions and offers organised tours of the city. The Underground Mining Museum admits groups of no more than 20 people for guided tours.
