When planning to book a hotel in Belashtitsa, the active Monastery of Saint George the Great Martyr is one of the local highlights. It is a historic religious complex founded in 1020. The complex includes a church, residential and farm buildings, a chapel, and a spring. The monastery is open to pilgrims; in the religious calendar, May 6 is highlighted as the feast day of Saint George the Great Martyr.

The monastery church contains the spring known as “Life-Giving.” In the courtyard stands a stone fountain dating from 1831, and the landscaped garden is maintained by the nuns.

Geographical Setting

The monastery’s official description mentions the nearby settlement of Chinarite; there stands an exceptionally large oriental plane tree with a trunk circumference of approximately 15 metres and an estimated age of more than 1,300 years.

The surrounding area of Belashtitsa includes Ruen as well as the sites of Shahbedinova Imaret dzhamia, Ushite, Saint Marina, Saint Demetrius Church, and Dormition of the Holy Mother of God. Baba and Cherni Vrah lie in the wider regional surroundings of Belashtitsa.
