  • Danube Park stretches across almost the entire urban waterfront, from west to east.
  • The PoĹľarevo Islands protected area includes islands with forests, low-growing vegetation, coves and river channels.

Which cultural traces shape Tutrakan?

Beneath the modern town of Tutrakanlie the remains of the Roman settlement of Transmarisca, whose origins date to 40–50 AD. The fortress complex includes the restored Tower No. 1 with a western gate and the Southern Fortress Wall with two defensive towers. These structures offer different insights into the complex: a single tower with a gate on the one hand, and a wall with two defensive towers on the other.

The Historical Museum is housed in the Teodorova House. The art gallery displays fine art from 1985 to 2017; individual exhibitions may change. Fishing nets, boatbuilding workshops and fishermen’s houses have been preserved in authentic form in the fishermen’s quarter. While the focus at Transmarisca is on archaeological structures, the fishermen’s quarter encompasses several facets of maritime heritage: working materials, craftsmanship and homes.

How do Danube Park and the island landscape differ?

Danube Park covers almost the entire city waterfront from west to east, extending as far as the port and the last boatyard. Its features include riverside paths, gardens, art installations and children’s areas.

A different landscape defines the PoĹľarevo Islands protected area near Tutrakan: it forms a Danube archipelago of forests, low-growing vegetation, coves and river channels. The area includes the eastern part of Goljam Kosuj Island, all of Malak Kosuj Island and smaller islands. The landscaped areas of Danube Park thus contrast with an island world of varied vegetation and waterways. The reservoir near Antimovo is also suitable for recreational fishing; conditions may vary seasonally.

What other cultural and festival themes are there?

Ali Baba Teke was founded in Varnentsi in the 17th century. The St Nicholas Day celebration in Tutrakan includes a procession and the blessing of the Danube waters. The festival also features a competition for fish dishes prepared by amateur cooks.

The “Tutrakan Epic” memorial complex in Shumenzi presents the battles on the Dobrudzha Front with a 3D map and a 360-degree film recreating the attack on Fort No. 6. Its multimedia format differs from the architectural and cultural themes of the other sites. Check current operating information before visiting.
