Culture and history

The Ethnographic Museum of Danube Fishing and Boat Building in Tutrakan opened in 1974 and is described as unique among the countries along the Danube. It displays authentic fishing tools and equipment from antiquity to the present day and documents boat building and fishing along the Danube as well as in the adjacent swamps and lakes. The exhibition comprises seven halls and two interior spaces in a building designated as a cultural monument from the early 20th century.

The Fishermen’s Quarter in the northeastern part of the city is an authentic architectural reserve of national cultural significance. It preserves fishermen’s houses, boat-building workshops, and fishing nets. The ancient fortress of Transmarisca began as a Roman settlement in AD 40–50 and was a permanent military post on the Danube Limes until the end of the 3rd century. The late antique fortress was completed in AD 299, when Diocletian visited the city for the second time. Restored Tower 1 was archaeologically investigated in 1995–1997 and conserved in 2000–2001. The southern fortress wall has two combat towers and is an important archaeological monument as well as a tourist site.

The Tutrakan Art Gallery opened in 2014 and displays works of visual art from 1985 to 2017. At the 1916 Military Cemetery memorial site, a 1922 obelisk bears inscriptions in Bulgarian, German, Romanian, and Turkish. Nature

The Kalimok-Brashlen protected area was established to protect one of the few remaining Danube wetlands and their unique biological diversity. In the Kalimok-Brashlen biodiversity management area, visitors are permitted only along designated tourist routes.
