Culture and History

The Church of Saint George the Great Martyr is listed as number 76 among Bulgaria’s 100 National Tourist Sites. It is also designated a monument of national importance and of high artistic and cultural value.

Lyubenova Mahala is associated with the revolutionary heritage of the Bulgarian National Revival. Vasil Levski visited the village in 1869 and helped establish a private secret revolutionary committee. The local committee later coordinated the committees of neighboring villages.

The church complex is also associated with the massacre of July 1877, known as the “Second Batak.” The victims were killed in the church, in the churchyard, and in the surrounding streets.
