Discover Dospat: Reservoir, Nature Trails and Culture

Dospat Municipality is located in the Western Rhodopes. Dospat Reservoir is 18 km long and about 1 km wide. The “Little Bosphorus” promenade runs along the shore: it is 2,120 m long, 3 m wide and exclusively for pedestrians.

Along the “Little Bosphorus” you will find pavilions, a barbecue area, two fire pits, tables, benches and a children’s playground. The promenade is therefore a clearly defined area for walking and spending time by the lake. The playground may be a specific point of reference for families planning a visit, without implying any general claim about the destination’s suitability.

There is a limited, seasonal range of water sports and leisure activities near the reservoir. These include boats, pedal boats, canoes, rowing and jet skis. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check in advance which options are available on your travel dates.

Karadzhadere is a protected landscape that helps safeguard the otters living there; they are considered very rare and endangered. In the Karadzhadere area, the Otter Trail offers a short and a long route, as well as a floating information centre about otters. Check locally whether the information centre is currently in use.

Pochilena Barchina, also known as Kral Markos Barchina, is located close to Dospat. The site is 5.7 km from Dospat in the direction of Batak. It was a fortress, and a sanctuary is located at its summit. The route there takes 2–4 hours in total and can be reached by jeep and on foot.

Dospat is also associated with cheese, kashkaval and fresh Dospat trout. Those interested in local products will find specific names here that are part of the area’s culinary character.
