Geographical Location

The municipality is crossed by the E-80, the Trakia Motorway, and the Sofia–Plovdiv–Svilengrad railway line. Near Ichtiman, the late antique Markova Mehana Fortress formed part of the defense system of Trajan's Gate and is associated with the Battle of 986 between Tsar Samuel and Basil II. The Stenos Information Center at Trajan's Gate offers guided explanations, an exhibition hall, a presentation room, and maps and souvenirs related to the fortress.

Culture and History

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Ichtiman was built in 1835. The Ichtiman Historical Museum first opened in 1951 with an ethnographic exhibition about the Ichtiman region and includes archaeological, ethnographic, and National Revival departments. The Ichtiman City Gallery is housed in a former Roman and later Ottoman bathhouse. It presents exhibitions featuring local woodcarvers, artists, and other creative professionals. The Chitalishte Slantse Cultural Center organizes cultural events and offers training in music, foreign languages, and dance.

Gardens and Other Attractions

The Borika Botanical Garden in the village of Borika in Ichtiman Municipality presents around 600 plant species from all continents except Australia. Pre-arranged group visits include tours of rare and unusual species accompanied by an explanatory talk. For individual visitors, the garden offers rest areas, two ponds with water lilies and ornamental fish, and a visitor center. Shindar Hut has 16 beds, a fireplace, an outdoor barbecue area, and bathrooms.

Near Ichtiman is the Air Sofia golf and hotel complex, featuring an 18-hole course, a driving range with a teaching room, and two practice greens. Beside the Iskar Reservoir, the Iskar Hunting Estate near Ichtiman offers photo safaris. Nadezhda Hut can be reached from the Trakia Motorway via the Ichtiman and Muhovo exit or from Mirovo railway station.
