Discover Pirdop: Culture, Nature and Historic Sites

The Zlatishko-Pirdop Basin is bordered to the north by the Balkan Mountains and to the south by Sredna Gora. The Koznitsa and Galabets mountain passes lie to the west and east. This setting defines the municipality’s landscape; the I-6 Sofia–Burgas road is also its main transport artery. There are seven waterfalls in the upper reaches of the Bobyovitsa River.

Hikers can choose from several named destinations. The trail via Bobyovitsa to Pavel Deliradev Hut is listed as taking about five hours. Pirdop is also a starting point for tourist routes to Paskal Hut. Hikes to Koprivshtitsa railway station, Klimash Peak and Koprivshtitsa start at the Dushantsi Reservoir. The ruins of the early Christian fortified Elenska Basilica date from the late 5th or first half of the 6th century and are considered a monument of national significance. During the Second Bulgarian Empire, the Elenska Church was an active literary centre. The Pirdop Apostle is associated with it: a Middle Bulgarian monument dating from the beginning of the 13th century, which is said to have been found in a niche in the church in the 19th century.

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Pirdop was built in 1819 and is considered the oldest monument from the Bulgarian National Revival period in the area. Its carved walnut-wood iconostasis, made by masters of the Debar woodcarving school, is especially noteworthy. It is one of only four surviving works by this school. The “Lukanova House” Museum is a monument of local significance and was built in 1870–1872.

The Todor Genchov Vlaykov Memorial School offers another perspective on the area’s history. It commemorates Pirdop residents who fell for their country in the wars of 1912–1913 and 1915–1918. Every New Year’s Day, Pirdop Municipality and the local “Rodolyubie” Club hold the “Peene na Prastenite” custom at Skalata Square. Women and girls in traditional dress sing ritual songs around a decorated cornel branch. Children and girls place rings and other objects in a copper cauldron filled with water and wheat grains. The custom thus brings together songs and symbolic objects to mark the beginning of the new year.

The Vlaykovi Days cultural festival takes place every year during the second and third weeks of May. It traditionally concludes on 24 May with a celebratory concert in front of the Napredak community centre. Pirdop’s summer festival is a folk celebration held at the Elenska Basilica in the Elensko landscape under the auspices of the municipality. Since 2017, following a municipal council decision, it has been held on the first Saturday after 20 July. The Christian Ilinden festival is also held in Elensko, among the basilica ruins, and organised by the church board of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

In the Borova Gora landscape, the municipality and the Paskal Tourism Association hold an annual winter sports and tourism festival on the last Saturday in February. The programme includes horse races for young people, tug-of-war and other competitions for children.

The area around the Dushantsi Reservoir, with its extensive meadows, is used for recreation in summer. In July and August, small campsites of tourists from Sofia and nearby settlements can occasionally be seen there. A free camping area has been set up on the southern shores.

The reservoir also serves as a training base for the Bulgarian national canoeing team. Another seasonal event in Dushantsi is the Petrovden folk festival. It usually takes place on the first Saturday after the Christian feast of Saints Peter and Paul, in the meadow above the reservoir. The programme includes a concert and a blessed sacrificial meal; guests traditionally come from all over the country. The village of Dushantsi is also home to Kufarita Bridge, an architectural and historic monument dating from the period of Ottoman rule, built on the foundations of a Roman-era bridge.
