Gurgulyat: Hotels and Accommodation

In the Tsarkviste area of Gurgulyat stands the Gurgulyat Pantheon, commemorating those who were killed during the Battle of Gurgulyat in the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885. The Battle of Gurgulyat was an episode of this war and is described as one of the most important engagements of the Serbo-Bulgarian War.

Culture and History

The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah once stood on the hill above Gurgulyat in Tsarkviste, before a memorial pantheon was erected in its place. The new Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah is located in the centre of Gurgulyat. Construction began in 2005; it features a carved wooden iconostasis and painted icons. This new church in Gurgulyat was consecrated on 10 October.

The Gurgulyat Pantheon was built between 1983 and 1985 to mark the centenary of the Serbo-Bulgarian War. It has the shape of a truncated quadrangular pyramid, is approximately 20 metres high and 25 to 30 metres wide. The Gurgulyat Pantheon covers approximately 700 square metres.

Nature and Trails

The Galyabovtsi–Petlyuka–Gurgulyat route connects the Galyabovtsi–Petlyuka eco-hiking trail with the Gurgulyat–Petlyuka eco-cycling trail and offers an opportunity for a picnic in nature. The combined route leads to the Gurgulyat Pantheon.

The route includes a rest area with a children's playground. At the highest point of the route stands a lookout tower overlooking the individual rock formations and the river gorge.

Surroundings

Petlyuka is located near Gurgulyat, approximately one kilometre to the east. Aleksievata Kashta is described as a three-star family hotel with a conference hall and a restaurant for 70 people.
