Culture and History

Bogomilovo was established in the early 16th century under the name Teke, meaning “holy tomb.” Teke attracted visitors from various places who came to pray and take a handful of “magical earth.” A sarcophagus found in connection with Teke is still located in a small structure in Bogomilovo.

East of Bogomilovo lies the Atiran locality, with traces of a large roadside station from Roman times along the Augusta Traiana–Philippopolis route. The land around Bogomilovo also contains the remains of a Thracian settlement and burial mounds. Tiles associated with the Thracians, as well as parts of a Thracian chariot, have also been found.

A local legend connects the Bobata fountain with a spring whose water was brought to Bogomilovo. The Ivanka Terzieva Chitalishte maintains permanent amateur groups for arranged folklore, old urban songs, and authentic folklore.

Customs

On Lazarus Day, Bogomilovo’s Lazarki group wears colorful traditional costumes, sings through the village, and visits homes. St. George’s Day traditionally includes a communal horo; the celebrations also feature antiphonal singing and reenactments of traditional rituals. At Christmas, the Koledari group traditionally walks through the village and visits homes. Babinden is also celebrated annually in Bogomilovo with a gathering of young mothers and grandmothers.

Local Life

The Bogomilovo festival includes a demonstration during which 100 kilograms of lyutenitsa are cooked in a large pan. The program includes tastings and a farmers’ market, as well as workshops for children and a culinary academy.

Nature and Geographical Setting

Bogomilovo is included in the Natura 2000 protected area BG0000628 Chirpanski Heights. BG0000628 encompasses habitats of eastern pubescent oak forests and protects the habitat of the European ground squirrel.

Bogomilovo lies in the southern foothills of Sarnena Sredna Gora. The village center is situated at an elevation of about 250 meters, while the terrain generally slopes toward the southeast.

Road III-6602 runs through Bogomilovo, connecting the village northeast with Stara Zagora and south with Road II-66. The wider road network also provides connections toward I-5 and the Trakia Motorway. Bogomilovo lies on both sides of the main road between Burgas and Plovdiv.
