The oak and beech forests of Vratsa Balkan Nature Park are located nearby. They provide a habitat for 180 bird species, including 157 protected species.

Below Vratsa Balkan lies the Vratsa Gorge (Vrattsata), a protected natural landmark with rock walls more than 400 metres high and more than 140 classified alpine climbing routes.

Active Experiences

The marked Botev Trail from Vratsa via Yolkovitsa to Okolchitsa is listed as a three-hour hiking route.

The tourist train passes Vratzata and can stop near the picnic area. Vratsa Trails takes mountain-bike groups along natural forest and rocky trails, with programmes ranging from easy to moderate and difficult.

Culture and History

The Vratsa Regional Historical Museum opened in 1953. It displays in situ Early Neolithic burials from Ohoden, dated to 6000 BCE, as well as a clay tablet from Gradeshnitsa, dated to 5000 BCE.

The Bolyarska Church is one of the oldest underground churches in Wraza city centre. It was built four metres below ground level and dates from the late 16th century.

The Kurtpashova Tower dates from the 17th century and was used as the fortified residence of a local feudal lord.
