Culture and History

Those wishing to book a hotel in Škrip can continue their accommodation search afterwards. The Museum of the Island of Brač in Škrip is located in a complex with Illyrian walls, a Roman mausoleum, a Croatian fortification and the Radojković Tower, dating from the 16th century. It presents Roman, Late Antique and Early Medieval stone monuments and sculptures, as well as ethnographic objects from Brač’s agricultural, livestock-raising and stone-working traditions.

The Cerinić family castle stands on Škrip’s main square. It dates from the 16th century; the castle built in 1618 is the largest fortified castle on Brač. Two Roman sarcophagi stand in front of the castle.

The Church of the Holy Spirit stands in the Škrip cemetery. Dating from the 4th century, it is a three-nave basilica. It is considered a typologically important example of pre-Romanesque architecture in Croatia. The Church of Saint Helena is an 18th-century church.

The čakavian poetry festival Štefe Pulišelić has been held in Škrip since 2009 and commemorates the poet Stjepan Pulišelić, who was from Škrip.

Olive Oil Tradition

By July 2013, the oil mill in Škrip had been transformed into the Muzej uja, which was opened to the public. The Muzej uja presents the history of olive growing on Brač and the traditional production of olive oil.

Trails and Surroundings

In the surrounding area, the 1.1 km-long themed Hercules hiking trail leads from the foot of Splitska’s horseshoe-shaped harbour to the Rasohe quarry. A marked trail to the Rasohe quarry makes the Hercules relief accessible to visitors. In the surrounding area, Roman quarries above Splitska supplied the stone used to build Diocletian’s Palace in Split.
