History and cultural heritage

The present-day settlement of Splitska was established in the 16th century after the pirates of Omiš destroyed a settlement founded in the 13th century. The settlement developed around the Cerinić-Cerineo family castle from Škrip, built in 1577. The Cerinić family castle is the oldest building in Splitska.

Splitska was an export port from which stone was transported for the construction of Diocletian’s summer residence in Split. A stone relief of Hercules can be found in the Rasohe quarry. The relief probably dates from the first half of the 3rd century.

The parish church of the Holy Virgin Mary Stomorena was built on the foundations of an old church dating from 1288. The Stomorena Church houses an altarpiece of the Virgin with Saints by Leandro Bassano, created in 1577.
