The lower Mrežnica within the Općina Generalski Stol is protected as the “Significant Landscape Mrežnica”; the area covers 1,401.79 hectares. The Mrežnica river system is connected with more than 90 travertine waterfalls, which form lake-like sections of the river. The area of the Mrežnica around Generalski Stol is connected with 22 waterfalls.

Rafting on the Mrežnica is organized on a section of the river from Generalski Stol to Zvečaj. Excursions by Mrežnica Adventure usually run between Generalski Stol and Zvečaj.

Cycling and Transport

Cycle Route 6 is 63 kilometers long and has an elevation difference of 116 meters. It leads into Generalski Stol and then follows the Mrežnica. Through Generalski Stol, it runs along the historic Jozefina Road. Generalski Stol is also connected to the Zagreb–Rijeka railway line.

History and Culture

In the Middle Ages, Generalski Stol was called Lipovac. In the first half of the 17th century, Vuk II Krsto Frankopan chose Generalski Stol as the site of a judicial table, after which the place received its present name. Generalski Stol developed in connection with the construction of the Jozefina Road between 1770 and 1779.

In the center of Generalski Stol on the historic Jozefina Road stands the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua. It was built of stone and bricks in 1829; the church and its votive chapel are registered as protected cultural property under the designation Z-3093. The historic center also contains a distinctive Catholic church whose entrance faces east and whose altar faces west, as well as an ethnographic collection presenting local traditions. Below the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is an older chapel with an image of Saint Nicholas Tavelić.

The Globornica Bridge was built in the last quarter of the 19th century. It is described as a unique and significant example in the history of stone bridge construction in Croatia.

Surroundings and Orientation

Nearby, Crkvišće is the local name for the site of a medieval parish church on Janjač Hill, which was presumably destroyed during Ottoman incursions. A virtual tour is available for the Crkvišće archaeological site. Crkvišće has been described as open to interested visitors.
