Culture

Gradišće-Bukovlje is a multilayered archaeological site featuring a prehistoric hillfort from the transitional period between the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. At this site in Gornje Bukovlje stands the single-nave early Christian Church of Saint George within the prehistoric hillfort; it is dated to the fifth century. The Late Antique fortress of Gradišće-Bukovlje was reinforced with defensive walls approximately two metres thick and at least two towers.

Crkvišće is described as one of the most significant systematically researched Late Antique archaeological sites in northwestern Croatia.

Nature

In the wider regional area, the protected Mrežnica Significant Landscape encompasses the lower course of the Mrežnica in the municipality of Generalski Stol. The Mrežnica is part of the Natura 2000 ecological network under the name Mrežnica-Tounjčica. Within the municipality of Generalski Stol, the river has 22 waterfalls.

Water

At the Mrežnica site near Gornje Bukovlje, the water depth is estimated at three metres or more. The Gornje Bukovlje bathing area is located directly above the bridge on the left bank of the Mrežnica.

Getting Around

Gornje Bukovlje is included in the recommended route of the Srce prirode cycling trail. Near Gornje Bukovlje, the cycling trail crosses the Mrežnica on a pontoon road bridge towards Zvečaj.
