The Baćinska Lakes are at the heart of Baćina: the lake system consists of seven lakes, six of which are connected to one another, while one lies separately.
Nature
The Baćinska Lakes are part of two Natura 2000 sites in the Neretva Delta and support numerous plant and animal species. They are also associated with two endemic fish species: Basak and Vrgorac goby. As karst lakes, their water surfaces lie 3 to 5 metres above sea level, while the lake beds reach as far as 32 metres below sea level.
The water connections are also part of the lakes’ distinctive character. The Baćinska Lakes are connected by a tunnel to the periodic Vrgorsko Lake. They are connected to the sea by a 164-metre-long tunnel and a 700-metre-long canal.
Activities
Kayaking is possible on the Baćinska Lakes. Traditional lađa boat trips offer guided tours of the lakes; visitors can also take panoramic trips in traditional boats. Swimming is also possible at the Baćinska Lakes.
A hiking and cycling trail connects six of the Baćina Lakes. The Baćinska Lakes are listed among the cycling destinations around Ploče. The hiking route through the Baćinska Lakes towards Ričevica and Sv. Ilija begins in the settlement of Portina in Baćina and forms part of the Via Adriatica.
Culture
The Baćina area contains the remains of the ancient settlement of Praetoria as well as the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century. A stećci necropolis is located near the ruins of the Church of St Andrew.
The Church of St Andrew in Baćina was an early Christian single-nave basilica and was later altered with pillars. Its roof may have had a pseudo-basilica form, probably following an alteration in the 11th century.
The local cultural heritage also includes Plokanje, a game more than 100 years old that resembles bocce and is played with stone discs. In nearby Peračko Blato, traditional local fig products can be sampled during a visit to the Baćinska Lakes.
