History

The port of Ploče and its railway began operating on July 15, 1945. Ploče’s post-war development followed the reconstruction of its port and railway. The architecture from the socialist era is also characteristic.

Ploče was first mentioned in 1387, at that time as a bay rather than a city.

The route of the Lađa Boat Marathon runs from Metković via Opuzen to Ploče. The marathon is held every August to revive the tradition of Neretva Lađa boats. Historically, Lađa boats transported fruit and vegetables through the Neretva canal network.

Nature and Water

The Neretva Delta near Ploče is protected and is home to more than 300 bird species. The Baćina Lakes are located a few kilometers from Ploče and consist of seven lakes. They feature abundant wildlife and archaeological remains of the Roman village of Praetoria; a cycling and hiking trail also runs around the lakes. At the Baćina Lakes, traditional boat photo safaris, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, cycling, swimming in hidden lagoons, and wildlife watching are available.

Near Ploče, shallow-water walking across sandbanks is possible at the mouth of the Neretva. The nearby Neretva estuary also supports kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Trails and Activities

The Ploče Trail has a 17-kilometer course with 800 meters of elevation gain and a 7-kilometer course with 250 meters of elevation gain. The Ploče Trail is a mountain run on the themed trail “Tragom bunkera.” It starts in a suburb of Ploče and passes eight bunkers, two abandoned hamlets, and several Illyrian burial mounds.

Nearby Višnjica Hill offers a walk to a viewpoint connected with Ploče’s military history.

In the nearby Staševica Valley, unpaved country roads provide cycling routes; cycling there can be combined with a stop at a local winery.

Events and Cuisine

Fishermen Night is a culinary event in Ploče featuring fish specialties prepared by local chefs and teams. Ploče’s events calendar also includes the Summer Wine Festival Ploče.
