The Church of St. Mary Magdalene stands on a documented prehistoric hillfort in Bazgalji. Part of the eastern rampart has been preserved, and fragments of prehistoric pottery have been found in nearby gardens.

Culture

Mary Magdalene in Bazgalji is a single-nave Romanesque church. Its fresco cycle includes a Deesis, apostles, two female saints, a bishop, and scenes from a Christological cycle. Several Glagolitic graffiti have been preserved on the church walls. The Bazgalji frescoes were discovered by B. Fučić in 1946. Bazgalji is also listed among Istria's significant fresco sites.

The surrounding area of Bazgalji is home to Dvigrad Castle and the Church of St. Mary on Škriljinah. Soardo-Bembo Palace is located in the wider regional area.

Nature

Bazgalji is included in the Natura 2000 site HR2001365 Pazinština, part of the ecological network. The Pazinština Natura 2000 site, which includes Bazgalji, is characterized by a mosaic of scrubland, forest, meadows, agricultural land, sinkholes, ponds, and small villages.

Veliki Breg and Trba are located near Bazgalji. Standar, Gruja Vrh, and Sveti Ivan are also located in the surrounding area.

Cycling

The Pazin 3 – Staza seljaka-plemića cycling route passes through Bazgalji. It is described as a route of average difficulty and can be ridden in both directions.
