Culture and History

Local tradition places Stari Žminj on the hill above the settlement of Gradišće. Stone from the Gradišće quarry was used for the slender columns of the parish church of St. Michael in Žminj. Gradišće also preserves a group of houses with baladurs dating from the beginning of the 19th century.

At the entrance to Gradišće from Žminj stands a family chapel belonging to the Matica family. It was built in 1929 by Antonio Matica and made in a local workshop in Valdedija. A chapel in Gradišće bears the dedication “Srce Isusovo i BDM” and is dated 1901. An inscription on a chapel in Gradišće from 1929 contains the names Matica Fradelan, Antonio and Vila Gradiscie.

Near Gradišće, route 147 passes the Kingdom of Festini cave, which features stalactite formations, and continues through the Cere forest. After the Cere forest, a clearing offers views of the peaks of the Učka mountain range.

Along route 147, you will come across the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua from 1734, known as Pilj. The Church of St. Fosca on route 147 features an original small church dating from the Byzantine period of the 6th century. Route 147 also passes the Klenovica pond, formerly known as the Lake of Love.

The route also passes varine, described as large artificial pits left behind by abandoned flint-sand mining.
