History and Culture

Žminj preserves an ensemble reflecting the history of its fortified town. It includes remnants of 15th-century walls and a castle, a public cistern dating from 1863, the parish church of St. Michael, and several chapels decorated with frescoes. Žminj Castle was built in the 15th century, probably on a square floor plan. The Žminj Tower is used for exhibitions. The traditional folk festival Bartulja takes place around St. Bartholomew's Church on the last Saturday in August.

The Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity, dating from the 15th century, stands north of the parish church of St. Michael and was once freestanding within Žminj Castle. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was added along the southern wall of the castle and painted in 1471. The parish church of St. Michael was built within the former fortress of Žminj; one of the castle walls was reused for its side façade. The Church of St. Anthony the Abbot was built in 1381 by Master Armirigus.

Čakavski Sabor was founded in Žminj on May 8, 1969, as a cultural and scholarly gathering that initially focused on Čakavian poetry.

Trails and Tours

Trail 761 Žminj–Feštini starts in Žminj next to the tower. Rumenija is an easy 8.5-kilometer cycling route. Žminjska štuorija is described as an introduction to Žminj's history, customs, language, and sacred and secular architectural heritage. It is also described as a free guided walking tour in English, offered during the summer months.

The “Authentic Istria” visitor map project places an information board next to the Žminj Tower and provides printed maps as well as QR-code maps.

Cuisine

The Istrian Pasta Festival in Žminj promotes and preserves traditional Istrian pasta and supports local producers. Žminjska štuorija includes tastings of homemade bread, demonstrations of the preparation of local makaruni and fuži, and a coffee tasting in Žminj.
