Coast and Local Character

History and Cultural Heritage

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Kuj was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier religious building. A Roman mosaic was found beneath its floor; the floor is glazed to make it visible. The church stands directly above Kuje Bay, which is described as Ližnjan’s most direct access to the sea.

Kuje Bay was probably used for mooring boats and ships since prehistoric times. Kuje has been recorded as a settlement and port since the end of the 12th century. At Cape Uljeva, the remains of three shipwrecks form a hydroarchaeological site listed in the Register of Cultural Heritage. The Uljeva A shipwreck preserves numerous remains of large early Roman amphorae.

Marlera Lighthouse was built near several islets and reefs to improve nautical safety in an area with strong sea currents and winter winds. From its construction until 1970, it was continuously inhabited.

Cycling and Water Sports

Cycling route 333 leads from Ušićevi Dvori to the sea and continues along the coast to Marlera. Kuje Bay and Marlera are described as suitable places for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Marlera is also described as a suitable place for windless surfing.
