Nature

The dinosaur site in Kirmenjak contains 971 footprints, 161 of which form a total of 23 trackways. The tracks are preserved in shallow-marine sediments in a coastal environment. Kirmenjak I is listed as a protected dinosaur fossil site in western Istria. The dinosaur site of Kirmenjak is also among the fossil sites protected under Croatia’s 2021 decision on dinosaur fossils and their sites.

Culture

Kirmenjak stone is known for its resistance to sea salt. It was used in the construction of the Rialto Bridge and the Doge’s Palace in Venice. There is also an architectural connection with Poreč: Kirmenjak stone was used to build the early Christian Euphrasian Basilica in the sixth century.

Kirmenjak is associated with a quarry operated at several locations south and north of the settlement. It produces light to light-brown Jurassic limestone, known for its characteristic stylolithic texture.

Cycling

Official Trail 162 Faragude Kontija is classified as a moderately difficult route. It passes through restricted sections of Kirmenjak’s still-active quarry and extends to the bike park on St. Becic Hill. Along Trail 162 Faragude Kontija, the MTB Trail Centar San Servolo is designated as a point of interest.

The bike park on St. Becic Hill has XC routes associated with the Poreč cycling club. The bike park also allows riders to complete repeated laps around the hill.
