Culture and History

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene has a semicircular apse, dressed, unplastered stone corners on its seaward-facing façade, three stone finials and a bell gable. A 1st-century AD funerary monument found in Zambratija is set into the south wall of the village church. Historical processions from the parishes of Umag and Savudrija came to Zambratija two days before the Feast of the Assumption to bless the surrounding fields.

The preserved half of the hull of the Zambratija shipwreck is almost 6.7 metres long and 1.6 metres wide. The Zambratija boat is a sewn-plank boat from the Bronze Age and is described as the oldest watercraft in the Mediterranean made using the sewing technique. The presence of the Zambratija shipwreck in very shallow water in Zambratija Bay was reported to the Archaeological Museum of Istria in 2008.

A traditional boat crane, known as a Grua, is still in use in Zambratija. In the southern part of Zambratija Bay are the partially exposed remains of an ancient rural complex with traces of dye production.

Geographical Location

Cape Savudrija is located near Zambratija, as is Cape Lako. The surrounding area of Zambratija is home to the Maritime Museum, Sveta Marija na Krasu and St. George Church. Castello di Muggia, Spiaggia Lido di Fido and Spiaggia di Grado are located in the wider regional surroundings of Zambratija.

Getting Around

The 24-kilometre Umag Coast–Stara Savudrija jogging route reaches Zambratija after passing Stella Maris, Katoro and Polynesia.
