Batomalj: Hotels and Accommodations

Batomalj can best be explored through its trails, the Vela Rika watercourse, and its sacred history. The Baška–Zarok–Batomalj–Pod Lipicu Educational Trail is 6 kilometers long and takes approximately 2.5 hours on foot. It presents the local ethnological heritage as well as the biodiversity of endemic flora and fauna.

Nature

A prominent feature of the educational trail in Batomalj is the Vela Rika watercourse. It is described as the only permanent watercourse on the Adriatic islands; in its upper reaches, there are waterfalls and mills.

The marked Pastirske staze trails connect Batomalj with Punat, Draga Bašćanska, Stara Baska, Jurandvor and Baska. From Stara Baška toward Batomalj, there are two starting points for these trails.

Culture

The Our Lady of Gorica sanctuary is located immediately next to Batomalj. It is one of the oldest Marian shrines in Croatia. The Our Lady of Gorica Church was built in 1415 and can be reached by road or by climbing 237 steps.

The Church of St. Nicholas in Batomalj dates from 1676. It contains a painting believed to date from the 13th century and to be connected with an earlier church whose ruins have been preserved at the Sveti Miluka site south of the settlement. The statute of the Our Lady of Gorica Brotherhood, dated 1425, is kept in Zagreb; it is the oldest Croatian brotherhood statute written in the Glagolitic script.

History

The restored Lipica mrgar is a multi-cell sheepfold with a flower-shaped ground plan. It was used to separate sheep belonging to different owners. The Lipica site contains one of the renowned Mrgari of Baška, which are described as stone flowers of fragile beauty.
