What cultural and historical attractions can you discover?
The Baška tablet was found in the Church of St. Lucy; a replica remains there. The church was probably built around the turn of the 12th century on the remains of an early Christian basilica and did not acquire its present form until the 14th century. A short trail from Jurandvor leads from St. Lucy’s Abbey, where the tablet was found, to a viewpoint overlooking Baška and the island of Prvić.
The Baška Glagolitic Trail winds through paved local lanes and the surrounding natural landscape. It includes 32 stone sculptures engraved with Glagolitic letters, as well as the complete alphabet and the meanings of its letters. Other sites of religious history include the Church of Our Lady of Gorica, built in 1415 and considered one of Croatia’s oldest shrines and the largest shrine in the Diocese of Krk, as well as the Church of St. John. The latter was built in 1232; the adjacent Sveti Ivan gallery houses the “Starac” bell from 1431. The Chapel of St. Mark, built in the Romanesque style in 1514, is now used as an exhibition space and museum of sacred art and is located near Vela Plaža.
Two feast days also shape the traditional customs: on 13 December, the feast of St. Lucy, a small loaf called hlipčić is still thrown from the bell tower in Jurandvor. On the Feast of the Assumption, 15 August, pilgrims carry a statue of the Virgin Mary by candlelight up the stairs above Batomalj.
