Jurandvor: Hotels and Accommodation

Jurandvor is marked by the Baška Tablet and traces of Glagolitic culture. This connection extends from the Church of St. Lucy to churches, sculptures and an archaeological park.

Culture

The Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor was built at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries on the remains of an early Christian basilica. The Baška Tablet was originally a partition inscription separating the monastery choir from the nave. It was found in the Church of St. Lucy in 1851.

Today, a life-size replica of the Baška Tablet is displayed in the church at its original location. The original has been housed since 1934 in the atrium of the Palace of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The complex of St. Lucy’s Abbey includes the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary and a restored residential building of the monastery. The remains around the Church of St. Lucy were brought together into an archaeological park in 2000.

At the entrance to Jurandvor stands the Glagolitic letter sculpture L, dedicated to Saint Lucy. It is 4.45 metres high and weighs 20 tonnes. The Church of the Holy Cross has a Romanesque bell tower on its façade.

Masses are regularly celebrated in the Church of the Holy Cross on Sundays and public holidays. Local worshippers continue to sing there in the manner used during Glagolitic Masses.

Nature

The Baška Tablet–Zakam hiking route begins in Jurandvor and leads uphill through a pine forest to Zakam. Nearby, the Zakam route reaches a viewpoint overlooking Baška, the Church of St. John and the islet of Prvić.

The Baška Glagolitic Trail also runs through the Baška landscape. It is marked by 35 stone sculptures representing the letters of the Croatian Glagolitic alphabet.
