Opatija: Hotels and accommodations

Opatija’s Franz Joseph I Promenade, known as the Lungomare, runs for ten uninterrupted kilometers through the town and neighboring villages. From there, views open up onto beaches, the Maiden with the Seagull landmark, and Art Nouveau villas. Anyone wishing to book a hotel in Opatija can then continue searching for accommodation.

Culture

Villa Angiolina was built in 1844 by Iginio Scarpa as a summer residence and houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism. Hotel Kvarner was established in 1884 as the first hotel on the eastern Adriatic coast. The Church of the Annunciation is a Neo-Romanesque church with a striking green dome and occupies a recognizable place in Opatija’s skyline. The sculpture Maiden with the Seagull by Zvonko Car is one of Opatija’s best-known symbols.

The Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion remains an exhibition pavilion and hosts cultural and artistic events. In St. James’ Park, next to St. James’s Church, stands a Neo-Baroque fountain depicting Helios and Selene. Angiolina Park contains more than 120 plant species, including camellias associated with Opatija. The Open Air Theatre, known as the Summer Stage, is located there by the sea and serves as a venue for concerts, opera, and contemporary music. The Gervais Centre offers a disco hall as well as films, theatrical performances, and congresses.

Nature

The American Gardens are a historic park in Opatija and have been under preventive protection since April 11, 2016. They are arranged on terraces and offer views over Kvarner Bay. Camphor trees, eucalyptus, camellias, gardenias, magnolias, Australian agaves, roses, grapevines, and peppers grow there.

Paths and beaches

The Carmen Sylva Walkway offers a one-and-a-half-hour walk beneath centuries-old trees, passing the Vrutki spring and a stone bench carved into the rock. The themed Top Attractions walk connects Opatija’s most important sights into a visitor route. Slatina is Opatija’s main urban beach. Slatina Beach has paved and sandy sections, sports facilities nearby, and a children’s playground. Lipovica is located just outside the center of Opatija and has a playground nearby.

Cuisine

The Opatija Market offers fresh local fruit, vegetables, honey, cheese, and fish from the Adriatic. Opatija’s cuisine is associated with Kvarner scampi prepared buzara-style, Adriatic fish, wild asparagus, shellfish and seafood, Kamelija cake made with fig, almond, carob, and marzipan, as well as locally produced olive oils, wines, and honey.
