Zalesina has long been associated with forestry education: field instruction has been held there continuously since 1951. The site also contains nine experimental plots used in a national permanent-plot project.

Nature

The Zalesina teaching and experimental forest covers 735.94 hectares in three management units. The forests are designated for teaching and scientific research, not for regular management. Within the Zalesina research forest complex, the Kupjački vrh unit ranges from 670 to 997 metres in elevation and contains karst features as well as very steep rock formations.

Zeleni vir is located in the vicinity of Zalesina. Lisina, Debeli Vrh and Skradski Vrh are located in the surrounding area.

History

The Fort Maltempo is located in the wider regional surroundings of Zalesina.

Getting Around

The 70-kilometre Goranska rapsodija road cycling route passes through Zalesina. There, cyclists leave the Lujzijana and continue along the historic tourist road Karolina towards Ravna Gora, Mrkopalj and Fužine. The cycling connection through Zalesina links two historic roads; the original mountain route of the Lujzijana dates back to 1811.
