Biskupija: Hotels and Accommodation

The Biskupija Archaeological Park is described as the most important archaeological site in Croatian national history and as Croatia's largest medieval archaeological site. Biskupija is therefore home to a place where numerous tangible testimonies to Croatian history come together.

Culture and History

Crkvina is the largest archaeological site in Biskupija. The Crkvina Basilica was a three-nave building with a three-part western structure and a western bell tower. In the 9th century, the Crkvina Church served as the mausoleum of a Croatian dynasty. In the 11th century, Biskupija became the seat of the Croatian court bishop. The Crkvina archaeological site is located at a Roman Catholic cemetery.

Biskupija is associated with five church sites: St Mary at Crkvina, St Cecilia at Stupovi/Cecela, a church at Lopuška glavica, a church at Bukokorovića podvornica, and a church near the Orthodox Church of Holy Trinity. Saint Mary's Church in Biskupija is associated with the earliest known depiction of the Virgin Mary in Croatian art. A memorial church was built on the foundations of Saint Mary's Church between 1937 and 1938, based on a design by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

The Stupovi site contained a pre-Romanesque three-nave basilica with three apses; the Stupovi Basilica dates to the 9th century. Lopuška Glavica contained a single-nave longitudinal church with two apses. Fifty-four graves have been reliably identified around the church at Lopuška Glavica.

Cycling Route

The designated Lopuška glavica cycling route passes through Biskupija along the Knin–Potkonje–Biskupija–Kovačić–Knin route. The route is 17.06 km long and has a total elevation gain of 133 m.
