History

Sveta Lazarica was built in 1889; construction began in 1874 and was completed on Vidovdan in 1889. Following war damage, the church was gradually restored from the late 1990s until 2012. It was built using construction techniques inspired by Moravia.

In 1940, Lazarica became a monastery and a metochion of Krka Monastery. A new bell tower was built at Lazarica in 1935. An elaborately decorated iconostasis is mentioned as having been commissioned in 1902; the icons were painted by the master Toša.

Landscape

Zvjerinac lies on the edge of Kosovo polje, a karst field covering approximately 27 km² and situated at an elevation of around 235 to 275 m. The Kosovčica River flows near Zvjerinac.

Tradition

A Vidovdan gathering is traditionally held at Sveta Lazarica on 28 June.
