Knin: Hotels and Accommodation

History

Construction of the Knin Fortress began in the 9th century during the early Croatian republic. The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Knin was originally built in 1866, destroyed in the Second World War in 1944 and replaced by a church consecrated in 1971. The Church of Saint Anthony is an 18th-century symbol of Knin. It was built at the probable site of an early Croatian church and has been renovated several times.

Culture

The Knin Museum is located in the Knin Fortress and features a permanent exhibition of ethnographic artefacts as well as archaeological, cultural-historical and geological-palaeontological exhibits. The collections of the Knin Museum also include fossils and geological samples from the area around Knin, archaeological material dating from prehistory to the late Middle Ages, as well as local furniture, handicrafts and traditional costumes. The fortress also houses the permanent Storm '95 exhibition. It opened in 2015 and includes historical documents and artefacts.

Nature

The Krčić River rises from karst springs at the foot of the Dinara and forms a deep, picturesque gorge in places. At 1,831 metres, the summit of Dinara is the highest peak in Croatia. Climbing Dinara requires extensive mountaineering experience.

Activities

There are 13 cycling routes in the Knin area, ranging from easy recreational trails to long climbs and road routes. Via Dinaris, route 413, is listed in Zone 5 – Knin. Horse-riding options in Knin include a riding school for beginners, trail riding and riding through the forest.
