On Paraćeva glavica, which is associated with the village of Ružić, stands the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer. It is the burial place of Ivan Meštrović and his closest family members. The church was built between 1928 and 1930 based on an architectural design by Ivan Meštrović. It is a solid stone cube built on a 20-metre-high slope above Petrovo polje. Culture
The Chapel of Saint Mary in Ružić was rebuilt in the late 1980s. It houses a wooden Madonna figure described as being of Tyrolean origin. In Gradac, located within the municipality of Ružić, a parish museum was opened in the crypt of the parish church in 2005. The parish church was built on a medieval early Christian church dedicated to Saint Peter; parts of the earlier church building have been preserved in the crypt.
The ancient Via Gabiniana ran through the wider area of Ružić, connecting Burnum, Promona, Magnum, Andertium and Salona. Balina glavica is a multilayered archaeological site in Umljanovići with finds from the Bronze Age and antiquity. Municipium Magnum was located on an important road connecting Salona with the Roman legionary camp of Burnum. The area around Ružić is also associated with a cheese traditionally made in a hide bag.
Nature
Petrovo polje forms the central part of the municipality of Ružić, and the Čikola flows through the field. Near Otavice, the Otavac flows into the Čikola. An old watermill still stands on the Otavac near Otavice. The municipality of Ružić is bordered by Svilaja on one side and Moseć on the other. Ružić lies on the edge of Moseć, whose slopes descend towards Petrovo polje and the Čikola. The Čikola separates Ružić from Gradac and Meštrović’s Otavice.
Mountains and Hiking
The slopes of Svilaja and Moseć are designated for hiking and hunting recreation. In the wider regional area, Planinarsko društvo Svilaja maintains hiking trails on Svilaja. Also in the wider regional area, Planinarsko društvo Svilaja operates the Orlove stine mountain hut on the slopes of Svilaja.
Getting Around
The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer is a ten-minute walk from Otavice. Visitors can also reach the entrance by car. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 15:00; it is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
