Bribir: Bribirska Glavica and Sacred History

Bribirska Glavica, a significant archaeological site near Skradin, is located in Bribir. It is 15 kilometres from Skradin and can complement a visit to Krka National Park. The archaeological zone covers approximately 72,000 square metres and lies 300 metres above sea level. At Bribirska Glavica, the settlement history can be traced from prehistory and the Liburnian period through antiquity to the early Croatian and medieval periods.

Culture

A museum at Bribirska Glavica displays part of the ZBIRKA BRIBIR collection. The collection contains finds from prehistoric, ancient, early Christian and medieval buildings, as well as from cemeteries at the site. The Bribirska Glavica archaeological zone bears the code Z-5036. The ancient remains include a Roman mausoleum with sarcophagi.

The development of religious life can also be seen in several surviving structures. The ecclesiastical complex connected to the rotunda probably remained in use until at least the 11th century. The Church of St Mary in Dol is the only ecclesiastical structure on the archaeological site that has been fully examined and conserved.

The historical evidence differs in terms of material and form: the collection refers to finds from buildings and cemeteries, the mausoleum to a Roman burial structure, and the churches to different floor plans and building traditions. These features allow the sites to be compared objectively without assigning them to the same period or the same ecclesiastical tradition.

Sacred Architecture

The Franciscan monastery in Bribir is the oldest Franciscan monastery in Croatia outside the Dalmatian cities. The Vratnice Church is a single-nave church with a semicircular apse; its floor plan is considered typically Romanesque for the 12th and 13th centuries.

The Church of Saints Joachim and Anne is used by the local Orthodox community. The Tjeme Church is a single-nave Gothic church with a rectangular apse and is located next to a cemetery dating from the 12th century. Different ecclesiastical traditions and architectural forms therefore coexist in Bribir without belonging to a single historical period.

Cycling

Bribirska Glavica is one of the historical and natural points of interest on the cycling routes around Skradin. These routes are considered moderately difficult and are suitable for recreational cyclists and mountain bikers. For planning purposes, the archaeological sites and cycling routes can therefore be regarded as different types of activity: the former focus on finds, structures and history, while the latter offer an active exploration of the surrounding area. The two focuses remain clearly distinguishable.
