Zaostrog: Hotels and Accommodation

Zaostrog's Franciscan Monastery of Saint Mary is an important local heritage site. Above the church entrance is an inscription in the Bosančica script dating from 1589. The monastery also includes a library with approximately 20,000 books, an archival collection, a permanent exhibition featuring works by Mladen Veža, and a botanical garden with more than 250 plant species.

Culture and History

The southern entrance to the Franciscan Monastery on the seaward side leads to the museum, library, botanical garden, and Mladen Veža Memorial Gallery.

Below Mount Viter and above Zaostrog are the remains of Ostrog Fortress; there is also a viewpoint nearby. The stone-lined village stream of Zaostrog, which carries a mountain stream to the sea, is protected as a cultural and historical monument.

Religious buildings include the Chapel of Saint Anthony in the village of Zaostrog, built in 1893; the Chapel of Our Lady near Kučine in Zaostrog, dating from 1911; and the Chapel of Saint Ilija near Prosiko in Zaostrog, built in 1894.

The Gothic Church of Saint Barbara in Zaostrog has a cemetery and a Baroque bell tower. The present-day parish church of Saint Barbara was built in 1872.

Hiking

The Z1 hiking route connects Kosovići and Zjatva and is listed with a walking time of 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Z2 hiking route connects Despoti and Šapašnik; its walking time is given as 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The ascent to Zjatva begins in the old village of Zaostrog, more precisely in the hamlet of Kosovići, and takes approximately 1.5 hours.
