History and architectural heritage

Orje in Žeževica has been identified as an Eneolithic hillfort. The parish church of St. George the Martyr stands on this natural elevation; Trbotor in Žeževica has been identified as an Iron Age hillfort. The church was built of hewn stone in 1754, consecrated on June 9, 1768, and is registered as a protected cultural property under registration number Z-5933. The Bolčić complex is also part of the historic architectural heritage. It preserves residential and agricultural buildings arranged around an open courtyard and was built from local stone known as modrac.

Routes

The historic corridor through Žeževica was known as the Route Napoléon and was also called Marmontova cesta. Visible wheel tracks have been preserved on the listed vicinal roads. A historic vicinal road ran from Katunske vlake via Grguša and Gornja Žeževica to Grabovac.

Landscape and nature

The geology of the Žeževica study area includes Cretaceous limestone and dolomite. The Šestanovac area lies between Biokovo Nature Park and the Cetina Gorge; its landscape ranges from rock formations in the Cetina Gorge to the mountain peaks of Biokovo and includes various preserved natural habitats. The Žeževica study area lies partly within Biokovo Nature Park.

Fourteen endemic taxa have been recorded in the Žeževica study area. In addition, 34 strictly protected taxa have been recorded there.

Regional cuisine

The Šestanovac area is associated with the cuisine of the Dalmatian Zagora. This includes, for example, spit-roasted lamb, veal prepared under a peka, and homemade bread baked in the hearth.

Places of worship

A Lourdes grotto has been built in natural rock near Žeževica. A candlelit procession led from the parish church on Orje to this Lourdes grotto.
