The Town Museum of Vis began operating on January 1, 2025, and reopened its hydroarchaeological exhibition with additional exhibition space. The following information about local places is also intended for travelers who want to book a hotel in Vis.

Getting There

Jadrolinija ferry route 602 connects Split and Vis; the crossing from Split takes 140 minutes. A ticket purchased for the Jadrolinija Split–Vis ferry reserves a place on the ship and departure at the desired time.

Trails and Landscape

An official hiking route leads from the ferry port of Vis through the old Kut neighborhood, across fields and along old paths to the bay of Milna. The route includes approximately 180 m of ascent and descent and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.

Culture and History

The Roman baths of ancient Issa were located in the coastal area of Vis, near the present-day gas station; they were built in the 1st century. Gospina Batarija is the most important Austrian fortification in the Bay of Vis and was built in the 1830s at Levaman in the center of the bay. It played a significant role in the Battle of Vis on July 18–20, 1866, and damaged the Italian ship Formidabile.

The late Baroque Church of St. Cyprian and Justina was built in 1742 in the Kut district of Vis. The Farolfi Tower was built in the early 17th century; its top floor is divided by a loggia. The balcony corbel of the Farolfi Tower bears the name of the poet Marin Gazarović. The Perasti Tower was built in 1617 by Vicko of Perast as a defense for the local population against possible Ottoman attacks on Vis.

The Church of St. George was built in the 9th century on a small peninsula at the entrance to the Bay of Vis. The Church and Monastery of St. Jerome were built on the Prirovo peninsula in the early 16th century. Marble taken from nearby remains of ancient Issa, especially from the Roman theater, was used for their facade.

Coast

Gradska plaža Prirovo is a pebble beach approximately 100 meters long on the Prirovo peninsula.
