Culture and History

Veliki Godinj preserves stone houses, paved stone streets, drainage channels, and separate areas for living, stables, and threshing. Since 2008, Veliki Godinj has been protected as Croatian cultural heritage.

The old parish church of St. Michael in Rašćane was built in the late 16th century. Stećci and a stone cross around the church indicate a medieval cemetery and probably an earlier church. Most of the stećci at St. Michael’s Church are decorated with geometric motifs as well as motifs of crosses, swords, bows, and arrows.

The single-nave Church of St. Stephen in Donje Rašćane was built in the late 17th or early 18th century. Three chest-shaped tombstones west of the church attest to a medieval cemetery that is older than the church. St. Stephen’s Church and the archaeological site associated with it in Rašćane are listed as protected cultural heritage in the development plan of the City of Vrgorac. Sixteen undecorated chest-shaped tombstones, including one with an incised inscription, have been built into the façade of St. Stephen’s Church.

Grebine is a protected medieval cemetery from the 15th century north of Pejkovići, on a road crossing the fields of Rašćane; it comprises six stećci, three slabs, and three gabled tombstones on bases.

Events

For 2026, Dan tradicije i kulturne baštine is planned as a one-day event dedicated to traditional customs in Veliki Godinj and Rašćane; it is to take place on the first or second Saturday in August.
