Culture

The parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zavojane was built from dressed stone in 1712. Its square apse is vaulted in the Gothic style. The high altar features a painting of the Virgin and Child from 1847 by Ivan Skvarčina. The church is listed among the protected immovable cultural properties of the Vrgorac area.

History

Settlement continuity in Zavojane dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by burial mounds throughout the area. The ruins of the Ančić Tower stand in the Kasaba area above the hamlet of Ančići and belonged to the Cukarinović family during Ottoman rule. The tower had a ground floor, two upper floors, and an attic. The outlines of its massive walls and some openings can still be seen beneath the vegetation.

Events

Mala Gospa is traditionally celebrated in Zavojane as a two-day event on the eve of the feast and on the feast day. The religious fair is associated with 7 and 8 September and includes traditional crafts, local products, and roast lamb.

Nature

The hiking ascent to Sveti Mihovil begins in Podastine, which is reached via Zavojane. Since there is no water source along the ascent, hikers must bring water before setting out. Sveti Mihovil offers views towards Biokovo.
