Culture and History

Fortica Fortress is listed as protected cultural heritage of Croatia under registration number Z-4198 and stands on a hill above Novigrad. The Hungarian-Croatian Queen Mary and her mother Elisabeth were imprisoned in Fortica Fortress in 1386. An Illyrian hillfort also stood on the site of the fortress, dating from between 2000 and 1000 BC.

KUĆA DEŽDERATOVICA is an interpretation centre dedicated to the maritime and fishing heritage of the area around Novigrad and is located in Novigrad. The Church of St. Catherine is the oldest church in Novigrad. It was commissioned by the Lika-Krbava magnate and Croatian Ban Butko Kuriaković in 1393.

The parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Neo-Stylistic stone building in the shape of a Latin cross, constructed from stone from Novigrad. It houses a votive statue of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows dating from the 16th century.

Coast and Water

Novigrad Beach has an underwater educational trail where visitors can explore the marine world. Novigrad Beach offers kayaking, pedal boating, rowing and windsurfing.

Cuisine

Novigrad traditionally hosts the annual “Okusi Novigradske dagnje” festival, where mussels freshly caught beforehand by experienced fishermen are prepared.
