Český Dub is surrounded by a romantic landscape with ever-present views of the Ještědský hřbet. In the town itself, evidence of its urban and ecclesiastical history can be found alongside a museum and distinctive historic buildings.

Culture and History

The Podještědské muzeum was officially founded in autumn 1919 and opened to the public in 1921. Today, the Českodubská johanitská komenda forms a separate exhibition of the Podještědské muzeum. The commandery was founded in 1237 together with the adjacent market settlement and opened to the public in 1993. Visits are possible only with a guided tour.

The Romanesque Chapel of St John the Baptist is one of the oldest surviving buildings in North Bohemia. The originally Gothic kostel Seslání Ducha svatého was founded as a parish church before the middle of the 13th century and later also served as the convent church of the Knights Hospitaller.

Townscape and Historic Buildings

The Renaissance town hall of Český Dub, with high gables and an octagonal corner tower topped by an onion dome and lantern, was completed in 1565. The partially preserved town walls of Český Dub are among the town’s significant sights.

The Blaschkova vila was built in 1880–81 as a representative residence and garden villa. The neoclassical family crypt of Franz von Schmitt, with its chapel, was built in 1872–73 according to plans by the Viennese architect Karl Tietze and is richly decorated with paintings, stucco and sculptures.

The Schmittův zámek is not currently open to the public.

Nature and Activities

The Krajem Karoliny Světlé hiking event has taken place annually since 1980. Swimming in the body of water at the publicly accessible Český Dub leisure area is possible at your own risk.

There are several ski slopes and cross-country skiing trails in the area around Český Dub.
