Liberec District: Hotels and Accommodation
Liberec District combines mountain landscapes with cultural and nature experiences. The district's mountain slopes offer ski lifts, cross-country skiing trails, and conditions for hiking and cycling. The activities mentioned thus cover interests in hiking, cycling, and winter sports. For travellers who want to find a hotel in Liberec District, the following overview places the district's specific natural and cultural features in context.
Landscape and Nature
The terrain ranges from 208 m in the north to 1,124 m at Smrk, the highest mountain in the Jizera Mountains. Liberec District is home to the national natural monument Čertova zeď and the national nature reserves Rašeliniště Jizery, Jezevčí vrch, Karlovské bučiny, and Jizerskohorské bučiny.
Jizerskohorské bučiny is listed as a UNESCO natural heritage site. The Vesec Valley nature trail runs for approximately 2 km around Vesec Pond and has seven information panels about wetland habitats and rare or endangered species.
Vesec Pond, also locally called Tajch, is used for swimming and walking; its beach is freely accessible. The waterfall system of the Great Štolpich plunges 30 m down a rock face.
Culture and Regional Character
The Českodubsko area combines preserved folk architecture with Sychrov Chateau. In the area around Hrádek, the Kristýna recreational centre is associated with the nearby Grabštejn Chateau. The Frýdlantský výběžek is associated with Frýdlant Castle and Chateau.
Grabštejn was founded in the second half of the 13th century as a border fortress guarding a trade route from Bohemia to Lusatia. Visitors can climb the former keep and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from there. The Chapel of Saint Barbara features wall paintings covering its entire surface.
Frýdlant is home to the oldest castle museum in Central Europe, which opened in 1801. Frýdlant also displays a collection of weapons from the Thirty Years' War and an armoury.
Lemberk features Baroque stucco decoration, Zdislava's room, a knights' hall, a black kitchen, and a coffered ceiling dating from 1610. Sychrov is a neo-Gothic chateau that served as a residence for the French Rohan family and preserves original furnishings and extensive wood carvings.
Trails and Excursions
Grabštejn offers two sightseeing tours and experience-oriented guided tours for children. The hike “From Lidové sady to Ruprechtice, or a Little Forest and a Little City” is an easy 4-kilometre route through the Jizera Mountains, passing the forest swimming pool and the U Obrázku Church.
The Lidové sady–Ruprechtice route can be reached from the centre of Liberec by tram 2 or 3 and completed by bus 25. Smrk is the highest mountain in the Czech part of the Jizera Mountains; its first observation tower was built in 1892.
Visitor Information
Sychrov Chateau is open to the public year-round and offers children's guided tours in July and August. Cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions take place there throughout the year.
