Prague Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consists of an extensive complex of palaces and religious buildings in various architectural styles. It includes Romanesque architectural remains from the 10th century as well as Gothic alterations from the 14th century.

Prague Castle was probably founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty. Today, it offers the public tours of historic buildings and exhibitions as well as concerts, guided tours, and other activities.

Culture and History

The historic center of Prague has preserved its overall form, layout, and spatial composition because it was spared large-scale urban redevelopment and extensive demolition.

Old Town Square developed from the 10th century onward as a marketplace at a crossroads of European trade routes. It was established in the 12th century and was the scene of numerous historical events.

Charles Bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in Prague. The fortified settlement of Vyšehrad was established around the middle of the 10th century.

Nature

The Vyšehrad promontory above the Vltava offers special views of Prague. The Vyšehrad grounds are freely accessible year-round.

Petřín is one of Prague’s most extensive urban green spaces. Petřín Park is crisscrossed by paths with benches, and there are also several children’s playgrounds.

Folk Culture

The National Museum – Ethnographic Department presents exhibitions featuring unique artifacts of folk culture from the Czech lands and Europe.
