The Late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Kájov is a pilgrimage church. It has been a national cultural monument since 1995; its present Late Gothic form was created between 1471 and 1488.
Culture and history
The Kájov pilgrimage church complex includes the Chapel of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the rectory and a hospice. The church complex is an exceptionally well-preserved ensemble of buildings from various construction periods.
In 1667, fifteen granite columns depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary were erected along the road from Český Krumlov to Kájov. The former pilgrimage road is considered a valuable example of a historic Baroque transport route and is closely connected with the pilgrimage complex. Below the church in Kájov, at the end of the pilgrimage road, a chapel with a fountain was built between 1686 and 1689.
Pilgrimage
The Kájovská pouť continues every year in October as a pilgrimage tradition; it takes place on the second Sunday after the second Saturday in October.
The group of statues depicting the three saints Tadeáš, Josef and Antonín Paduánský in Kájov was restored in cooperation with the municipal office. The spring that feeds the chapel’s fountain is described as healing water and is said to originate from the main altar.
Walks and sightseeing
The municipality suggests a walk from church to church via Raziberk as an excursion in Kájov. It also recommends the “Dubovky” benches as a place to sit and contemplate the surrounding nature.
The new parish museum can be visited by prior arrangement. Pilgrims on the Way of St. James can obtain a stamp in Kájov and, by prior arrangement, can also stay overnight.
Cycling
The “Znovuobjevené Kájovsko–Boleticko” route is an easy one-day cycling excursion in the form of a 20-kilometre circular route. It is signposted and described as suitable for families, less experienced cyclists and seniors because of its easy terrain. The Iron Age hillfort of Raziberk lies to the left of the route from Kájov towards Boletice.
